Deacon Robert

Age: 50’s

Raised by his single father Steven who never recovered from the killing of his wife. Steven’s consistent blaming of “Hispanics” was a constant reminder not to trust this “lower-class” demographic. DR feels justified in his thinking despite being the deacon of his church. “love thy neighbor” has conditions when it comes to “those people”. He also feels an obligation to his father to agree with this racist attitude. And so his view of hiring Ps. Billy is that of a “hired gun” to come in and preach a luke-warm message and not to upset the congregation. 

Linda

Age: 40’s

Wife to Deacon Robert
Daughter: Kate
Son: Kevin

A devout Christian woman and obviously more clever that Robert. Recognizes her husband’s flaws, but picks her moments to point things out. Adheres to the Ephesians 5 description of marriage and understands her place in the family. Her look is all-American and has no issues wearing t-shirts and jeans and keeping the household going.

Kate

Age: Late teen (Sr. in HS)

Daughter to Robert and Linda

Kate is your quintessential American teen. Raised in a solid family, popular in high school, goes to church regularly, and is known as a “good girl”. Really keeps her nose out of trouble, but understands there’s a whole world out there to explore. Not quite a “daddy’s girl” as she has more in common with her mother. But obviously loves her father and wants him to be proud of her. As most young teens do, she struggles with complexities of life.

Kevin

Age: 10ish

Son to Deacon Robert and Linda

Your typical playful 10 yr old that doesn’t have a care in the world.

Manuel

Age: 50’s

Wife: Katarina Son: Ramone

Originally from El Salvador, Manuel is an upstanding Christian man and was the head archetect and project manager in San Salvador in charge of historic building preservation. While at the top of his career, he knew that the only chance he could provide a future for his son was to emigrate to the USA. The “American Dream!” And so despite the previous administration’s lax border policies, Manuel wanted to emigrate through the proper channels. He also was unwilling to purchase a home in the USA until he and his family became “naturalized citizens”. So by the time he’s introduced he knows more about the US Constitution than even Deacon Robert. He’s also very grounded speaking only when necessary… stoic and mature.

Katarina

Age: 40’s

Verbose personaity… Katarina knows the hardship of living in El Salvador but also appreciated the perks that came with Manuel’s position. But because she is loyal to her husband, she agreed that leaving friends and family for the USA was the right thing to do. She embraces her culture and carries an inner strength and endurance. But there’s always an underlying current with the loss of her daughter in El Salvador.

Ramone

Age: Late teens – Sr. in HS

Son to Manuel and Katarina

Good looking but naive. Ramone is trying to find his place within a new school and a new neighborhood. But has fellow hispanic friends locally as we see from the local band he’s formed. Obedient to his parents to a degree, but tries to “get away” with things from time to time. As for his faith, he goes through the motions as dictated by his parents, but because he is immature, does not have a clear understanding or relationship with God. Thinks of church as a “club” to meet friends.

Tito

Age: 20’s

Cousin to Ramone
Manuel is his uncle

American born but family from El Salvador. Cousin to Ramone and family. Manuel is his uncle. Parents both died in a car crash (we learn at end) and inherited the family home. He is by himself with no direction but only to embrace his Hispanic roots. Is unhappy with illegals being kicked out of the country feeling like it’s “his people”, and so he feels entitled and embraces a victim mentality. Does not care who is hurt in the process of enforcing his sense of right and wrong.

Ps. Billy

Age: 40’s

Recently hired, Billy takes on a more “observe and reflect” approach at first as he’s trying to suss out the congregation and who’s who. Knows his doctrine, devout Christian, but also strategic in his approach. Generally a fun guy, but takes his role as a pastor seriously.

Dana

Age: 30’s – 40’s

Wife to Ps. Billy. She’s accustomed to following her husband and the ministries he’s hired to. But has also seen the abuse her husband has had to endure when coming to new churches. 

Darnell

Age: 10ish

Ps. Billy and Dana’s adopted son. Much like Kevin.. not a care in the world. 

Angel

Age: 20’s

A school pal that has chosen to down the same road as Tito. He knows right from wrong, but like Tito, feels a sense of entitlement. 

Mateo

Age: 20’s

Has a harsher more “thug look” about him than Tito or Angel. It’s obvious he would get others with him in a lot of trouble.

Gladys

Age: 70’s

Older woman who plays the keyboard for the church. Is also on the member’s board. Older, crotchety, and set in her opinionated ways.
